Crystal

Every Friday we have a model come and pose for us, for a long pose - 3 hours at the Columbia Center for the Arts. It is a great opportunity to work from life, and to develop a community of artists.

This painting is available for purchase.

Big Red - sold

I had to try my hand at a bell pepper. Edward Weston had no idea what he started. They are beautiful subjects to paint. So sculptural.

Tomato and It's Shadow - SOLD

This is Tomato #6. The end of the Tomato series. I definitely learned some things from doing this series. I enjoyed Carol Marine's video of a painting demo. I hope everyone gets to see it.

Tomato and Demitasse - SOLD

More ways to paint a tomato. This is tomato #5. One more to go. I bought a bunch of fabric napkins of different patterns and solid colors that I am using under my still life arrangements. The stripes were fun. I will use them more in the future. The different fabrics add a challenge and interest. I love demitasse cups! No it isn't a giant tomato!

Tomato and Lime - SOLD

I like the way this one turned out. My class said they didn't like the background color as much as Tomato 2. You can't please everyone!

Hot Sauce - SOLD

Cholula Hot Sauce! This is a fun bottle to paint. I had problems taking the photo though. I couldn't seem to get the glare off of the painting. It seemed like it took as long to take the photo as it did to do the painting. The background looks grainy in the photo but not in person. Red is fun to paint.

More Limes - SOLD

I saw Carol Marine's key limes painting, and I was running out the door to get to my Oil Painting Basics class that I teach every quarter for Community Education. And I needed some Still Life props. I dashed into the grocery on the way to the class, and because of Carol's inspiration, I grabbed a package of the little key limes. Easy to transport to the class... don't bruise easily... lots of them in the package for everyone to have their own limes to paint... and the class loved painting the limes! And so did I.

Radish and Lemon - SOLD

Concentrating on color palettes - contrasting, analgous. And the shadow colors they cast on each other and surfaces.

Lemon Behind - SOLD

Analgous Colors. I like the way the lemon behind the limes turned out. Mostly because of the edges. These little things (the lemons and limes) are harder to paint than they look. Try it. You'll see.

Limited Palette

I was reading the book, "Classical Painting Atelier" by Juliette Aristides, about use of a limited palette. So I did this painting only using Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre and White. There is alot to be said for using a limited palette every once in a while. I took a workshop from Juliette Aristides on Bainbridge Island a few years ago. She is an excellent instructor. I highly recommend her book.

New Blue Cup - SOLD

The thing I like best about this is the contrast between the light blue cup and the intense red background.

New Work at Art on the Boulevard

I wasn't posting for a while because I had a show at Art on the Boulevard, opening on April 4, and a Gorge Artists Open Studio Sale at my house/studio April 13-14, and I got the flu that was going around here like wildfire! Sorry - I'm back on track now though.
